Yasuhisa Toyota was born in 1952 in Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture. After graduating from the Fukuyama Junior and Senior High School Attached to Hiroshima University, he attended the Kyushu Institute of Design under their Department of Acoustic Design program, where he learned about the techniques involved in the acoustic design of concert halls. After graduating in 1977, he began working at Nagata Acoustics, where he continues to work today. Currently, he serves as the president of Nagata Acoustics America, Inc. and as the representative of the company’s Paris office. He has worked on over fifty projects for concert halls, multipurpose halls, and other venues. One of those projects was Suntory Hall in Tokyo, completed in 1986. The superior acoustics of the hall are supported by many musicians and orchestras both in Japan and around the world, and Suntory Hall has become the central location for concerts in the global city of music, Tokyo. Another project he was involved in was the Walt Disney Concert Hall, a Los Angeles landmark that opened in 2003. Many musicians who have visited this concert hall have praised its excellent acoustics. In addition, Elbe Philharmonic Hall in Hamburg, Germany and Pierre Boulez Saal in Berlin, both of which opened in 2017, have attracted much attention internationally. In August 2004, Mr. Toyota received honorary degrees from the Art Center College of Design in California and from Bard College in New York.
